Mirova and Carbone 4 are jointly developing an innovative method to measure companies' contribution to the energy transition
Mirova, the responsible investment subsidiary of Natixis Asset Management, has enlisted the expertise of Carbone 4 to jointly develop a methodology and a decision-support tool for assessing companies’ contributions to reducing global greenhouse gas (GHG) worldwide.
Mirova was founded on the ambition to integrate sustainability considerations into the core of its investment processes, with the aim of generating a positive impact on the economy and delivering attractive, sustainable returns for its clients. The company therefore naturally joined the “Montreal Carbon Pledge” and “Portfolio Decarbonization Coalition” initiatives, launched in parallel by the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP-fi) ahead of COP 21 (the 2015 Paris Climate Conference).
These commitments involve measuring the carbon footprint of Mirova’s investments in listed equities, with the goal of achieving a level consistent with the international community’s objective of limiting global warming to +2°C. Achieving this climate goal requires, above all, significant investments in carbon-free energy and energy-efficiency solutions. Beyond the need to manage the carbon footprint of its investments, Mirova therefore recognized the need to establish a methodology for measuring their contribution to the desired energy transition scenario.
In this context, Mirova turned to Carbone 4, a consulting firm that has developed, among other things, the Bilan Carbone methodology and the carbon analysis methodology for projects financed by the French Development Agency (AFD). The joint development of this methodology will enable Carbone 4 to freely assist all investors wishing to incorporate the risks and opportunities associated with climate issues into their investment decisions. The methodological principles will be published in September 2015 and shared with all financial stakeholders interested in the initiative.
